What’s The Cost Of A Well Pump Installation?

If you have a well and are interested in either installing or replacing a well pump, your first question is probably, “How much is it going to cost to install a well pump?”

Typically, well pumps cost about $3,000+. The reason that this range is vague is because there are a couple of significant factors that play into the total cost of your installation, including:

In the blog below, we’ll take a deeper look at each of these factors to give you a better idea of how much your well pump installation will cost. However, while we can provide you with general estimations of how much your installation will cost based on the above factors, the only way to get an exact estimation is to reach out to a licensed plumber.

Cost Factor #1: Type of pump you want to install

The cost of your well pump installation will depend greatly on the type of pump you’re interested in installing. There are a variety of different pumps, but a few of the most common are:

  • Submersible pumps
  • Jet pumps
  • Solar-powered pumps

Submersible pumps, jet pumps and solar-powered pumps will generally work for both shallow and deep wells, but if you have a deeper well, you’ll likely need a larger motor, which will increase your overall cost regardless of the type of pump you choose.

Submersible pumps typically cost anywhere from $400 and $2,000. Submersible pumps are generally made out of cast iron and stainless steel, and are usually the most durable type of pump. The specific cost of your submersible pump will depend on the size of the well you have, the material the pump is made of and the size of the motor (¾- 5 HP). The cost of your installation will also increase if you need to add any additional piping or any infrastructure needs to be repaired.

Jet pumps usually cost anywhere from $300 to $1,200 and are generally made of stainless steel, cast iron or thermoplastic. Stainless steel jet pumps are usually self-priming, but jet pumps made of cast iron and thermoplastic are not self-priming and can eventually stop pumping if they lose their prime. Overall, jet pumps are less expensive than submersible pumps, but provide less volume and pressure. Jet pumps typically range from 1/2 to 1 HP.

Solar-powered pumps typically cost anywhere from $1,400 to $2,600, and are not as common as jet or submersible pumps. Solar pumps come in both plastic and stainless steel, with the stainless steel option being more expensive, but also more durable and long-lasting. While solar-powered pumps can save on energy costs, they do require direct sunlight for 6-8 hours a day.

Cost Factor #2: The depth of the well

The deeper your well is, the more your well pump installation will generally cost, for two reasons:

  1. The deeper your well is, generally, the larger the well pump motor you need, which will increase the cost of your well pump
  2. The deeper your well is, the more time and work it generally takes to replace your well pump, which will usually increase the cost of your installation

Shallow wells are generally classified as anything 25 feet deep or less, whereas deep wells are anything ranging from 25-150 feet deep. To determine exactly how deep your well is and how the depth will affect the cost of your well pump installation, you’ll need to have a licensed plumber take a look at your well and provide you with an estimate.

Cost Factor #3: Company or contractor you hire

The cost of your well pump installation will also depend on the company or contractor you hire. Generally, the more experienced a contractor is, the more they will charge for installation.

However, hiring an experienced and licensed plumber to install your well pump is extremely important for the following reasons:

  • A plumber can provide expert recommendations- A plumber will be able to accurately determine the type of pump you have and the depth of your well, providing you with accurate and expert recommendations on the type of pump that will work best for your situation.
  • A plumber can alert you of issues- A plumber will be able to determine if there are any issues that need to be addressed or upgrades that need to be made to ensure your new well pump works safely and efficiently.
  • A plumber will install your pump correctly- This can end up saving you from dealing with expensive rework or safety issues.
  • A plumber has the right tools- Removing and installing a new pump correctly and safely takes experience and the right tools. When you hire a quality plumber, you don’t have to worry about renting these kinds of tools or dealing with a plumber who doesn’t have the right equipment to do the job correctly.

To find a plumber that’s not only licensed but experienced, you’ll want to look for someone who:

  • Has proof of their license and insurance
  • Has recent 4 and 5-star reviews
  • Has 10+ years of experience
  • Will provide you with upfront estimates in writing
